The REAL Secret To Writing A Bestseller

Bestseller SecretThe harsh reality for many writers dreaming of having a best-selling book is that they’re marooned in a permanent state of procrastination.

Sound all too familiar?  Fortunately there’s a remarkably simple way to break free of this that my father taught me.  He advised: “All you have to remember is this: ‘Beginning Is Half Done’.”

I don’t think anyone would disagree with this, least of all me, because it’s proved to be amazingly beneficial to my productivity.

The ‘Secret To Writing A Bestseller’ poster above is taped to the wall over my writing desk and keeps me motivated.  I thought you would find it motivating too, so if you’d like to post it on your own wall, just right click on the image, save it and print it out, or even use it on your own blog with a link back here.

Thanks to you – the readers of this blog, it’s been a very rewarding year. I’m hoping to grow Bestseller Labs even faster in 2014.  Watch this space !

    HI Jonathan,
I’ve added my vote, as your posts are relevant, timely and non-intrusive!!

They’re also very encouraging….as I’m just beginning book 15 and was mooching about on the computer, worrying that I can’t write much today as I’ve cut my index finger and it hurts, but knowing full well that I’ve got some speech software I can easily use….

    I know what I’m doing now….

    BACK TO WRITING!

Voted for your blog. :-) Thanks for showing me how; I didn’t know anything about it before.

Also, the poster is wonderful; I’ve saved it. It’s especially relevant these days as I’m on my 5th rewrite and am coming up with all sorts of excuses about why I can’t get to the story right now … but I continue to dream about how successful it’ll be once it’s done. Aye, there’s the rub, for in this dream of success one forgets the caffeine-driven labor that must needs go before. (With apologies to Shakespeare.)

    Jonathan,

I have to say I’m normally skeptical about these kinds of “how to” sites on writing, but I’m grateful I found yours. I’ve learned a lot, and what I already learned after writing my first book (Necropolishas been reinforced (sometimes you have to hear something over and over before it sticks!). I go back to your stuff repeatedly and am implementing a lot of your suggestions. You seem genuinely interested in helping people and I admire that.

I just wanted to say thanks so much.

Christmas has brought out the memories of long ago and this makes writing at this time slow to a halt. I now write notes to my self and post them on a board with white, red, green, and blue so I wont lose that thought. With seven grand children and their wives and eleven great grand children and two more on the way there is some one in and out at all times of the day. This third book may be ready by late spring, God willing. A merry Christmas and great new year to all. Harold

Wattpad is an excellent way to get early exposure and feedback. One main advantage is to build up a small network of supporters with whom you discuss your work, and who later become buyers when you publish.

Read your post, and here’s a sentence or two from it I considered particularly apt:
“…When it comes to my writing, I detach myself from the outcome. I let it go. At least, as much as I can. I try to focus on finishing a book and telling a good story, not on how many copies it will sell…”
